Yesterday’s session was intense. I finished the current chapter, switched story lines and wrote another full chapter.

Those might not be the best chapters I’ve written yet – far from it – but the ideas kept coming to the page pretty easily.

If I look at what remains before me : I have one last chapter to write before the finale , then two finale chapters, a small ending chapter and the epilogue.

This next chapter I have to write might have been part of the chapter I wrote yesterday : in fact, maybe that will be the case in the rewrites. I decided in that case to stick to one chapter per viewpoint, but as I already broke that rule once, maybe I can do it again here. The last chapter I could merge this one with is pretty slim (it’s the shortest chapter I’ve written yet) and I have a feeling that this next one is going to be small too. Merging two small chapters could lead to a full sized one. On the other hand, there are a few hours between the two scenes, so putting them in the same chapter could seem artificial. There is also the fact that this last chapter has to show all the protagonist’s preparations. It’s significantly different in mood from the preceding one which is more research based than action oriented.

I guess that I will have to keep them separate in the end. This could be me trying to consistently write chapters over 2000 words long. Having one a little shorter than that bugs me. I could fleshen it out, but as it turns out, I’ve written for that one what I wanted to write (more than I wanted to write actually, since another story element just popped into my head as I was writing), so why even try to expand it?

As I said last time, the end is near. I have some cool ideas about what’s going to happen, have had them for some time, even. Maybe I have too many cool ideas for them to work together well or for me to be able to mesh them together consistently.

I planned the finale part to be two distinct chapters, from two different point of views. That should make things interesting and hopefully provide a satisfying ending. I just hope I didn’t forget any loose threads somewhere. For the earlier problem I had (see my previous issue about character in crashing planes), I resolved not to use the idea that would have sent the plane crashing down, as it turns out I’ll still need the plane to be more or less functional after the finale, so no big plunge here. I have plenty of stuff going on to afford removing one idea here and there.

That whole ending should keep me busy for the remaining of the week. I hope to finish the finale by sunday afternoon. After that, the last chapter and the epilogue should feel like a gentle stroll on the beach.

That is, unless my characters decide otherwise. They’re so unpredictable.

November’s going to be a busy month.   First, I’m going to the Utopiales con between november 10th and 13th. Last year, I met Brandon Sanderson there and had a blast. I don’t suppose this year will be as good, but Utopiales […]
